The Rise of Nationalism in Europe is an important chapter of Class 10 History. 1. What is a Nation-state?

A sovereign state of which most citizens or subjects are united also by factors like language or common descent.


2. Who were Marianne & Germania?

Marianne & Germania were the female allegories of France & Germany.

Nations were portrayed as female figures; they did not stand for any particular woman in real life; rather it sought to give the abstract idea of the nation concrete form.


3. Explain three beliefs of the conservation that emerged after 1815.

The three beliefs are: -

a) They believed that established traditional institutions of state & society the church, social hierarchies, property and family should be preserved.

b) They also realized that modernization could strengthen traditional institutions like the monarchy and a return to the society of the first revolutionary days was not required which eventually contribute towards making state power more effective & strong.

c) The belief that abolition of feudalism and serfdom, replacing it with a modern army an efficient bureaucracy and strong economy could strengthen the automatic monarchies of Europe.


4. Explain any four measures introduced by French Revolutionaries to create a sense of collective identity among the people of France.

(i) The ideas of La Patrie (the fatherland) and Le Citoyen (the citizen) emphasized the notion of a united community enjoying equal rights under a constitution.

(ii) A new French flag, the tricolor, was chosen to replace the former royal standard. New hymns were composed, oaths taken and martyrs commemorated, all in the name of a nation.

(iii) The Estates General was elected by the body of active citizens and renamed the National Assembly.

(iv) A centralized administrative system was put in place and it formulated uniform laws for all citizens within its territory.

(v) Internal customs duties and dues were abolished and a uniform system of weights and measures was adopted.

(vi) Regional dialects were discouraged and French, as it was spoken and written in Paris, became the common language of the nation.

(vii) The revolutionaries further declared that it is was the mission and the destiny of the French nation to liberate the peoples of Europe from despotism.

5. Explain the civil code of 1804.

(i) Napoleon set about introducing many of the reforms in the territories that came under his control that he had already introduced in France.

(ii) All privileges based on birth were removed, equality was established before the law and secured the right to property.

(iii) He removed guild restriction from towns.

(iv) He simplified administrative division, abolished the feudal system & freed peasants from serfdom & manorial dues.
