Class 10 History Chapter 2 - Important Questions


1. What is meant by term Satyagraha?

It emphasized the power of truth and the need to search for truth.


2. Why did Indians protest against Simon Commission?

The Simon Commission was formed to bring some reforms in India. However, it did not have a single Indian member. That is why it was opposed by Indians.


3. Describe the 'Salt March'.

Gandhiji started his famous 'Salt March' on March 12, 1930 from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, a small coastal village in Gujarat. He started with 78 followers & thousands joined him during the course of the march. He walked for 240 miles. On 6th April he reached Dandi & ceremonially violated the law, manufacturing salt by boiling water.


4. What were the main factors responsible for the growth of national awakening in India?

Main factors were:-

(i) The discontent of all sections of people against the British rule.

(ii) Administrative Unity.

(iii) Inflow of New Ideas.

(iv) Impact of Foreign Events.

(v) Economic Exploitation.

(vi) Influence of the Social Reformers.

(vii) Rise of Educated Middle Class.

(viii) Growth of Press and National Literature.

(ix) Rational Discrimination Practiced by the British.


5. What was the Rowlatt Act? How did the Indians show their disapproval towards the Act?

This Act had been hurriedly passed through the Imperial Legislative Council. It gave the government enormous powers to repress political activities and allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years.

1. Rallies were organized in various cities, workers went on strike in railway workshops, and shops closed down.

2. The British took action by picking up local leaders from Amritsar and Mahatma Gandhiji was barred from entering Delhi.

3. On 10th April, the police in Amritsar fired upon a peaceful procession provoking widespread attacks on banks, post offices and railway stations.

4. Martial law was imposed and General Dyer took command of the city of Amritsar.

5. On the command of General Dyer Jallianwala Bagh incident took place in which many innocent Indians lost their lives.
